In an attempt to introduce Buddhism to a young audience last week, the world's first Buddhist robot was activated in the 400-year-old Kodaiji temple in Kyoto, Japan, Mindar. The Kodaiji temple hopes that Mindar will be able to reach younger generations in a way that traditional monks cannot.
Mindar robot
The android robot, modelled on Kannon, the Buddhist goddess of mercy, pronounces a 25-minute text with translations into English and Chinese. The hands, face and shoulders are covered with silicone to mimic human skin. The robot can fold the hands in prayer
Mindar is an end product of a collaboration between the Kodaiji temple and professor Hiroshi Ishiguro, associated with the University of Osaka and cost $909,090.
