The Everyday Robot project performed by Alphabet's X group is making robots that can safely operate in human environments, where things change every day, people show up unexpectedly, and obstacles appear out of nowhere. In order for robots to be useful day to day, they need to understand and make sense of the spaces where we live and work, and adapt to them as they gain experience. This requires new forms of machine intelligence.

Hyundai has developed a new exoskeleton - the Vest EXoskeleton or VEX. The exoskeleton can be worn as a vest and is intended to support employees in the (car) industry in the heavy work they do above all. The VEX reduces fatigue and increases the physical strength of the user by imitating the movements of the joints and supporting the activities under heavy load.

Scout, Amazon's delivery robot, starts delivering parcels after a successful small-scale test. From Monday to Friday, the robot drives around the Irvine region in California. The reason Amazon starts in sunny California is because of the weather. It doesn't rain much and the sun shines a lot, so there's little chance that the robot will have to drive in all weathers to deliver a package. In Seattle, where the robot was tested, it was different.

As a global partner of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, Toyota aims to offer mobility solutions that go beyond the provision of official vehicles. One of the ways they do this is by participating in the "Tokyo 2020 Robot Project", a project led by the Tokyo Organising Committee that brings together the Tokyo Metropolitan government and the games' partners with experts in robotics. During 'Tokyo 2020', Toyota robots will be used to support people's mobility. By helping people make their dreams come true, the brand believes it will be able to further contribute to the experience and success of the games ahead.

China is already the world's largest market for industrial robots. As labour costs continue to rise, the demand for robots in the country will be stronger. The country's agricultural sector is seen by some as a place where technologies can take root. A research institute and a startup, Fujian Academy of Agricultural Sciences and Fujian Newland Era Hi-Tech Co Ltd, are determined to develop an agricultural robot. The sensor-rich agricultural robot can move between two rows of chlorophyll in a greenhouse, collect data on the plants and return them to the control room. The robot, suitable for 5G, is equipped with two 5 megapixel cameras as "eyes". With sensors at the top of its head and mouth, the robot can also detect wind speeds, carbon dioxide, humidity, temperature and other data about the natural environment of the greenhouse.

The largest supermarket in the Netherlands now has a robot delivering orders to customers. This is a trial by Albert Heijn at the High Tech Campus in Eindhoven. Customers place their orders via an app. The groceries are placed in the robot by employees, who then drive to the right place with the help of cameras and sensors. Customers still have to go outside to pick up the groceries from the trolley.

Furhat has made commitment that social robots should not only give keynotes on stages but also be put in the hands of developers, as soon as possible. One of the examples is Petra. PETRA: the world's first health pre-screening robot Together with Merck Pharmaceuticals, the developed PETRA, a medical screening robot. The idea is to use Petra for medical screening. The friendly-looking robot seeks interaction to give an indication of the medical condition. Besides the fact that this is necessary in many countries, a robot also regularly reduces the distance to discuss difficult subjects. We have also seen this before in pilots in obese children.

MIT’s new mini cheetah robot is springy and light on its feet, with a range of motion that rivals a champion gymnast. The four-legged powerpack can bend and swing its legs wide, enabling it to walk either right-side up or upside down. The robot can also trot over uneven terrain about twice as fast as an average person’s walking speed. Perhaps most impressive is its ability to perform a 360-degree backflip from a standing position. Researchers claim the mini cheetah is designed to be “virtually indestructible,” recovering with little damage Robotdog race “Eventually, I’m hoping we could have a robotic dog race through an obstacle course, where each team controls a mini cheetah with different algorithms, and we can see which strategy is more effective. That’s how you accelerate research.”

Robotisation, automation and artificial intelligence are a hot topic and an integral part of our society. A new survey by the Vrije Universiteit Brussel now shows that most Belgians embrace intelligent technologies and see them as a tool in their daily lives. Only a minority also believe that robots can fill in human relationships or characteristics, such as friendship.

Amazon starts testing an autonomous liver robot near its Seattle home in the northwest of the United States. The "Scout" is a six-wheeled all-electric trolley that reaches just above knee height. The robot has the size of a small cool box and rolls over the pavement at walking speed. Deliveries with the robots will take place from Monday to Friday and only during daylight. The trolleys will autonomously follow a set delivery route, but will initially be accompanied by an Amazon employee. The technology giant ensures that the devices "can safely and efficiently navigate around pets, pedestrians and any other object in their path".

Toyota has been developing humanoid robots for some time now, of which the T-HR3 is the most recent. This robot was announced at the end of 2017 and, like its predecessors, is very similar to humans. The robot is equipped with a head, two legs and two hands with a total of ten fingers. The T-HR3 is designed as a partner robot that can support people in a variety of conditions. The robot can be used on construction sites, in disaster areas or in space to perform dangerous tasks. With the most recent developments in the field of networks (5G) the applicability is approaching.

Google parent Alphabet closes Schaft, the secret unit that develops running robots aimed at helping in disasters. After the sale of Boston Dynamics to Softbank, this is the second farewell to the large initiative Alphabet started in 2013. Consumer robot It is a sad end for a division that once looked like it had a bright future. In 2013 Schaft won the Robotics Challenge of DARPA with surprisingly graceful movements. There were even plans to bring a consumer-oriented product onto the market by 2020, according to reports, but it soon turned out that this was too optimistic a goal. New focus A source known at Tech Crunch indicated that the focus of Alphabet was already there. The tech giant now focuses more on industrial robots and parts such as robot arms than on fully independent robots.

We have known the Atlas robot from Boston Dynamics for some time. Running over inhospitable terrain, a somersault backwards. The makers are one step further, as can be seen in this video. The control software uses the whole body, including legs, arms and trunk, to combine the energy and power to jump over the trunk and jump up the steps without breaking the tempo. (Step height 40 cm.) Atlas uses computer vision to locate itself.
